SpyNote Malware Is Ready to Attack Android Smartphones

A malware tool for creating the SpyNote, an Android Trojan, is widely available on the Dark Web. A wave of attacks on Android smartphones may be coming.

The Unit 42 team of Palo Alto Networks discovered SpyNote by monitoring malware discussion forums used by criminals. It has the capability to:

  • View all messages on a smartphone
  • Eavesdrop on phone calls
  • Use the phone's camera and microphone
  • Remotely track the phone's location

It is hard to get rid of SpyNote after it is installed. After a user is tricked into installing it, SpyNote removes its icon and runs new installations and updates.
